General Checkups & Cleanings at West Broadway Dental, Kitsilano

At West Broadway Dental, we believe that a healthy mouth starts with consistent, quality preventive care. Dr. Sharma and our Kitsilano team use digital X-rays and intraoral cameras to detect issues in their earliest stages, giving you the most conservative — and cost-effective — path to lifelong oral health. During each visit we assess your teeth, gums, jaw, and soft tissue so nothing slips through the cracks. We serve patients from across Vancouver's west side and beyond, and we're proud that many of our patients have been coming to us for years because they trust us to be thorough, honest, and genuinely invested in their wellbeing.

Transparent pricing

We offer direct insurance billing to most major carriers so you leave with minimal out-of-pocket expense. Checkup and cleaning fees are in line with the BC Dental Fee Guide, and we will always give you a full cost breakdown before beginning any additional treatment. Patients without insurance are welcome — ask our front desk about our flexible payment options.

Common concerns we see

  • Plaque & Tartar Build-Up

Even diligent brushers and flossers accumulate hardened tartar in areas a toothbrush can't fully reach. Left untreated, tartar irritates the gums and creates an ideal environment for decay. A professional cleaning removes this build-up safely and completely.

  • Undetected Cavities

Early-stage cavities rarely cause pain, which means many patients don't know they have one until it's advanced. Our digital X-rays expose cavities between teeth and beneath existing restorations long before they become symptomatic, keeping treatment simple and affordable.

  • Gum Disease

Gingivitis affects a large portion of adults and often shows up silently as occasional bleeding or mild swelling. Caught early during a routine exam, gum disease is reversible with a professional clean and improved home care — no invasive treatment required.

  • Oral Cancer Risk

Dr. Sharma performs a thorough oral cancer screening at every checkup, examining the tongue, cheeks, throat, and lymph nodes. Early detection dramatically improves outcomes, and it adds only a couple of minutes to your appointment.

How the treatment works

  1. Comprehensive Examination

Dr. Sharma reviews your medical and dental history, then performs a full clinical exam using our intraoral camera so you can see exactly what we see. Digital X-rays are taken as needed — typically once a year — using a fraction of the radiation of traditional film.

  2. Professional Scaling & Cleaning

Our registered dental hygienist removes plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces, including along and just below the gumline. We use ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments to clean thoroughly without discomfort.

  3. Polishing & Fluoride

Your teeth are polished to remove surface stains and smooth enamel, making it harder for bacteria to adhere. A fluoride treatment is then applied to strengthen enamel and provide lasting protection between visits.

  4. Personalised Home-Care Plan

Before you leave, Dr. Sharma or your hygienist walks you through any findings and gives you a clear, realistic home-care routine tailored to your needs — no generic pamphlets, just practical advice for your specific situation.

Common questions about general checkups & cleanings

How often should I come in for a checkup?

Most adults benefit from a checkup and cleaning every six months. Patients with a history of gum disease, dry mouth, or high cavity risk may be advised to come in every three to four months. Dr. Sharma will recommend the schedule that makes the most sense for your oral health.

Do you take digital X-rays?

Yes — all of our X-rays are fully digital. Digital X-rays emit up to 80% less radiation than traditional film and produce instant, high-resolution images that Dr. Sharma can enlarge and share with you on-screen during your visit.

My teeth feel fine. Do I really need to come in?

Absolutely. The absence of pain does not mean the absence of problems. Cavities, early gum disease, and even oral lesions are frequently painless until they've progressed significantly. Routine visits are the most reliable way to keep small issues from becoming expensive ones.

Is the cleaning painful?

Most patients find cleanings comfortable. If you have sensitive gums or heavy tartar build-up, there may be some tenderness during scaling, but our hygienists work gently and will check in with you throughout. Local anaesthetic is available if needed.

Do you direct-bill my insurance?

Yes, we direct-bill to most major Canadian insurance providers. Bring your insurance card and member ID to your first appointment and we'll handle the paperwork. We'll always confirm your coverage and any estimated balance before starting treatment.
