Dental Emergencies Don't Wait — Neither Do We

Call us when you need us most. We keep same-day slots available for urgent dental problems and will always do our best to see you right away.

Emergency Care at West Broadway Dental, Kitsilano

A dental emergency is stressful, painful, and often strikes at the worst possible moment. At West Broadway Dental, we reserve time in our schedule every day for urgent care — because we know that a cracked tooth on a Friday afternoon or a lost crown before an important meeting demands a real, immediate solution, not an automated voicemail. Dr. Sharma and our team are experienced in diagnosing and treating the full range of dental emergencies quickly and calmly. We serve patients from across Vancouver, and if you've never visited us before, don't worry — we'll get your records sorted and focus on getting you comfortable first. If you're experiencing severe swelling, difficulty swallowing, or airway compromise, please call 911 or go directly to a hospital emergency room.

Transparent pricing

Emergency exam fees are transparent — we'll tell you the cost before we begin. Most emergency procedures are covered in part or in full by dental insurance, and we direct-bill on your behalf. For uninsured patients, we'll outline costs clearly and work with you on payment options so that cost is never a barrier to getting the care you need urgently.

Common concerns we see

  • Severe Toothache

Intense, throbbing tooth pain — especially if it wakes you at night or is accompanied by swelling — usually signals an infection or abscess that needs prompt treatment. Delaying care allows infection to spread; call us as soon as possible.

  • Broken or Knocked-Out Tooth

If a tooth is knocked completely out, keep it moist — ideally in milk or between your cheek and gum — and call us immediately. Speed is critical: a tooth that's replanted within an hour has the best chance of surviving. For a broken tooth, save any large pieces and contact us for a same-day appointment.

  • Lost or Broken Restoration

A lost filling, crown, or veneer exposes the underlying tooth to temperature sensitivity and further damage. Temporary dental cement (available at pharmacies) can protect the area, but see us promptly to avoid complications.

  • Dental Abscess or Facial Swelling

Facial swelling, fever, and a persistent bad taste are signs of an abscess — a serious infection that requires immediate dental attention. We will drain the infection, prescribe antibiotics if indicated, and address the source to prevent recurrence.

How the treatment works

  1. Call Us First

Phone our Kitsilano office as soon as your emergency occurs. Our team will assess your situation over the phone, give you first-aid guidance to manage pain or protect a damaged tooth, and get you booked into the earliest available slot — same day whenever possible.

  2. Arrival & Rapid Assessment

When you arrive, we prioritise your comfort immediately. Dr. Sharma or our on-call team member performs a focused exam and takes any necessary digital X-rays to diagnose the problem accurately and quickly.

  3. Immediate Pain Relief

Before any detailed treatment discussion, we get you comfortable — whether that's local anaesthetic, draining an abscess, or splinting a displaced tooth. You should be free of acute pain before you leave our office.

  4. Definitive Treatment & Follow-Up Plan

Once you're comfortable, Dr. Sharma explains the diagnosis, your treatment options, and the recommended next steps. Some emergencies are fully resolved in one visit; others require a follow-up appointment for definitive restoration, which we book before you leave.

Common questions about emergency care

Do you see patients who aren't already on your patient list?

Absolutely. If you're experiencing a dental emergency and need help, call us regardless of whether you've been to our office before. We'll take care of you first and handle the administrative details efficiently.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Any situation causing significant pain, visible swelling, a knocked-out or severely broken tooth, a lost crown exposing a sensitive tooth, or an abscess should be treated urgently. When in doubt, call — our team can help you determine whether same-day care is needed.

My tooth was knocked out. What should I do right now?

Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with milk or saline if it's dirty, and either reinsert it into the socket (bite gently on gauze to hold it) or store it in a small container of milk. Call us immediately. Time is critical — the sooner the tooth is back in place, the better the prognosis.

Can I take painkillers while I wait for my appointment?

Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen are generally effective for dental pain and can be taken as directed on the packaging. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum tissue, as this can cause a chemical burn. Our team can advise you over the phone on what's appropriate for your situation.

What if my emergency happens after hours?

Our after-hours voicemail provides guidance and our on-call contact number for genuine emergencies. For life-threatening situations — severe swelling affecting your airway, high fever with facial swelling — please go directly to Vancouver General Hospital emergency department.
